The long history behind the story
In 2020, Apollonio will celebrate the 150th anniversary of its winery. After a century and a half, the Apollonio family’s passion for winemaking has been passed down from one generation to another. The history of Apollonio is long and intense, this is a winery that has earned the title “Historic Enterprise of Italy”. Salento lies east of the Apulia region, in the deep south of Italy; warm and friendly, it has been preserved by centuries of isolation; this has been a key factor as to how it has kept its ancient wine-growing tradition alive. The history of the Apollonio winery dates back to 1870, in the aftermath of Italian unification (1851 – 1871), this is when Noè Apollonio registered the company, he set up his own vineyard and started to make wine. He was armed with a plot of land and with the knowledge he had inherited from his wine merchant father Tommaso, and peasant grandfather Giuseppe. In the late 19th century, a phylloxera epidemic obliged winegrowers throughout Europe to pursue a new and better way of growing vines. At that time, wine was everything: it was food, care, relief and a pass time, therefore, Noè decided to take action, he rolled up his sleeves and began a long-lasting adventure with the support of his family and his tireless workers.
Later on, Noè’s son Marcello became driven by the same passion as his father, proving to the world that he was just as hardworking and enthusiastic. In this period, Salento’s wines were utilised as an excellent “blending wine” due to its high alcoholic content: merchants from Piedmont, Veneto, Lombardy, or Tuscany bought it in bulk to add it to their own wines. Every Monday, many producers in the area gathered to fix market prices at the “Caffè della Borsa”, which overlooked a Roman amphitheatre that had been recently dug out.
Marcello Apollonio often attended the Caffè della Borsa with his son Salvatore, who would soon run the winery with the same commitment and ability to grasp changesas his father. At the end of World War II, while poverty was slowly giving way to economic boom and the market was in an upswing, Salvatore intuitively strategised as to how he might take advantage of new business opportunities. By introducing business management, he started a new era characterised by a more modern and efficient production model, and in 1975 he began to bottle high-quality wines under the Apollonio brand name.
Marcello and Massimiliano Apollonio have been at the helm of the company since 1995, they are the fourth generation of the family to lead the winery. Driven by enthusiasm and passion and by the experience they had acquired in the field, they decided to pursue the ambitious goal of expanding their products beyond national borders. Under new management, Apollonio has specialized in wine ageing and has expanded its retail network. It has widened its range of wine products, with excellence in mind. Apollonio’s wines are now sold in 36 countries where they are greatly appreciated; they tell the story of a family and a territory whose identities and authenticity have been left untouched. Every year about 1,500,000 bottles are produced, divided among so many labels and different lines: fine wines, of which “Terragnolo” deserves a special mention, as well as the “Mani del Sud” and the “Elfo” wine, these are three labels that are always well received by consumers as well as by the media. History, tradition and an innovative spirit, this is how the Apollonio winery has established itself as one of the most convincing wine producers in all of Puglia.
Massimiliano, a winemaker worth mentioning
The winemaker is the soul of the winery. Having a head enologist in a wine producing family is very fortunate indeed and Massimiliano Apollonio has been the winemaker in the winery since 1995. At present, he is the President of Assoenologi Department of Puglia, Basilicata and Calabria. He is also the Consultant to “Tourism Movement of Puglian Wines” (“Movimento Turismo del Vino Puglia”); a professor at ONVA (this acronym stands for: Organizazione Nazionale Assaggitori di vino – the Italian national organization of wine tasters); he is also the only Italian winemaker on the Panel Chairman team, he judged 5starwines competitions for 3 consecutive years. After successfully obtaining a degree in wine making, he also accumulated experience at important wineries in Italy, France and Spain. He controls the quality of Apollonio winery and controls the production macroscopically: grape cultivation, harvesting, wine making, bottling and other links to ensure the production of great wine. Based on his technical background, practical experience and love of research, he uses his creativity to produce high-quality, original wines.
PremioApollonio, an annual fancy event for the theatre industry
In addition to the family’s dedication to wine making, a love of theatre has been passed down in the Apollonio family. Salvatore inherited his love of the theatre from his father Marcello. Marcello and Massimiliano decided to honour their father’s untimely death by awarding prizes to actors who have made outstanding contributions to the theatre industry. The local drama academy is in charge of selecting the winner of the award. This is an award dedicated to Puglia, a land rich in natural resources and widespread creativity; numerous artists and personalities from the world of entertainment, culture and Italian journalism are guests at the various editions of the Award. In 2018, the fourteenth edition of this event saw Oscar winner Helen Mirren as the recipient of this award, while in 2019 the #PremioApollonio was awarded to John Turturro, an Italian American actor, writer and filmmaker.
Let’s conclude the Apollonio’s story with this inspirational video:
Your gift was the gesture of generous friendship, one which I can only now appreciate in its full magnitude.
The sensation it gave me as I sipped it drew me to far away places,
The taste and flavours, they even have colours that I didn’t know existed before now.
There is no farther journey than that which brings us back to what we had previously allowed to elude us.
Those wines need to be enjoyed with the same care that one would take when peeling a prickly pear or when chewing the tip of a chatalogna chicory
You make wine that looks to the future
